IS MATTER AROUND US PURE?
                                                       LESSON 4

GOOD MORNING BOYS!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES-

At the end of today’s class you will be able to-
1) classify mixtures on basis of their particle size
2) study properties of solutions
3) state examples of solution

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS- copy everything in BLUE.

Dear students

In our previous blog we studied how mixtures are different from a compound.
We also stated a few examples of homogeneous and heterogenous mixtures.

Mixtures are also classified as  (based on their particle size)
Solutions
Suspensions
Colloids

SOLUTIONS

1. Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances.

2. A solution has two components-
Solvent – which dissolves the other component and is present in larger
             amount.
solute  - which dissolves in the solvent and is present in smaller amount.

3. examples –

a) Sugar solution- sugar is the solute and water is the solvent

b) Air – is a gaseous solution. The gases present in air form the solute and nitrogen gas which constitutes 78% of air forms the solvent.

c)Aerated drinks like soda water- Carbon dioxide is the solute and water is the
     solvent.

d)Tincture of iodine – is an antiseptic, where iodine is the solute and alcohol
  Is the solvent.

e) Alloys are solid solutions. These are mixtures of two or more metals or metals
  with non metals.

CONSTITUENTS OF AN ALLOY CANNOT BE SEPARATED EASILY !
YET ALLOYS ARE CLASSIFIED AS MIXTURES… WHY?
ANSWER IN THE COMMENT BOX BELOW

(DO NOT COPY)

4.The particles of a solution are very small and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

5. Solutions do not scatter a beam of light passing through it,as its particle size
Is very small. So the path of light is not visible.

6.The solute particles cannot be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.

7. Solutions are stable. The solute particles do not settle down when left undisturbed.

THIS IS ALL FOR TODAY BOYS!

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY! 😊😊
