Tissues Blog 2

Hello Learners,

In previous blog, we learned about the significance of division of labour in multicellular organisms. The structural organisation of organs and organ systems is far more specialised and localised in complex animals than even in very complex plants. This fundamental difference reflects the different modes of life pursued these two major groups of organism particularly in their different feeding method. They are differently adapted for sedentary existence on one hand (plants) and active locomotion (animals) contributing to this difference in organ system design.

Today, we will discuss more about PLANT TISSUES.

At the end of today's topic, learners will be able to
(i) define meristematic tissue.
(ii) explain the importance of meristematic tissue in the plant body.
(iii) tell the location of meristematic tissue in the plant body.
(iv) draw the location of meristematic tissue in the plant body.

                                        PLANT TISSUE

Plant tissues are divided into two main types-
(i)          Meristematic tissues, and
(ii)         Permanent tissues

(Draw this flow chart in your note book)

Meristematic Tissue
The tissue which has the capacity to divide. It is present only at growing regions. Depending upon the position where they are present, meristematic tissues are classified into three categories-

    1.   Apical meristem- present at the tips of roots and shoots. They are responsible for increase in length of the plant.
    2.   Intercalary meristem- present at the base of internodes. They are responsible for increase in length of the internode.
3.   Lateral meristem- present on the sides parallel to the long axis of root, stem and branches. They are responsible for increase in width or girth of the organs.

(Draw this diagram)

Characteristic Features of Meristematic Tissues
(i)          The cells are similar in structure (spherical, oval or polygonal).
(ii)         Cells are compactly arranged generally without intercellular spaces between them.
(iii)        Each cell contains a prominent nucleus and dense cytoplasm.
(iv)       Cell walls are thin and cellulose.
(v)         Vacuoles are generally absent.

NOTE:        The cells formed by meristematic tissue take up a specific role and lose their ability to divide. As a result, they form a permanent tissue. This process of taking up a permanent shape, size and function is called differentiation.
