Chapter 1: MATTER IN OUR SURROUNDINGS-II

Hello boys., Good Morning!! Hope the previous blog was helpful and informative and all the queries are dealt with.

Today we will be leaning more about:
  1. States of Matter
  2. Characteristics of Solids, Liquids and Gases
  3. Diffusion
As the learner you will be able to:
  1. Tabulate matter around us in three different states.
  2. Learn about the physical properties of solids, liquids and gases.
  3. Analyze the effect of Kinetic energy on diffusion of particles.

Remember the drill:
1.     the text in red is to be written in your separate Chemistry Notebook
2.     the text in violet is to viewed by clicking on it.

THE STATES OF MATTER
Let’s watch the below video and tabulate the characteristics of the three states of matter namely:


1.     SOLIDS
2.     LIQUIDS
3.     GASES

INTERMOLECULAR SPACES are the gaps between the particles of matter.

Less space means more attraction between the particles as it is in the case Solids.
Large spaces means no attraction between the particles as it is in the case of Gases.
And Liquids have moderate space between its particles so attraction forces lie between Solids and Gases.

The order for INTERMOLECULAR SPACES is
SOLIDS < LIQUIDS< GASES

Hence, the of FORCES OF ATTRACTION will be
GASES< LIQUIDS< SOLIDS

That is why, solids look more compactly packed and have high density and volume than liquids and gases.

MOVEMENT OF THE PARTICLES

If we have enough space between the particles, then the particles must have more room to move around. Or we may say they have the Energy to move. This energy of the moving particles is known as KINETIC ENERGY (K.E.)
The order of K.E. is
SOLIDS< LIQUIDS< GASES

The movement of the particles of matter is termed as DIFFUSION.

The more K.E. is possessed by the particles the farther they will diffuse. The K.E. increases by increasing the temperature. So MORE HEAT ➨MORE K.E. ➨MORE DIFFUSION

Now you understand why the smell of hot food reaches you faster than the cold food in the fridge.
