Tissue Blog 7
Hello Learner,
In the previous blog, we have discussed animal tissue in brief. I hope you must read about animal tissue given in text book.
Today, we will be discussing more about them in details
At the end to today's topic, you will be able to
1. Explain epithelial tissue.
2. Describe different types of epithelial tissue.
3. Tell the location and function of different type of epithelial tissue.
4. Draw diagrams of different type of epithelial tissue.
So, let us start the topic......
(A) EPITHELIAL TISSUE

Characteristic
features
(i)
Epithelial
tissue covers most organs and cavities of the body.
(ii)
Epithelial
tissue cells are tightly packed in a single or multilayered sheet.
(iii)
They
have only a small amount of cementing material between them and almost no
intercellular spaces.
(iv) All the types of epithelial tissues
rest on an extracellular fibrous basement membrane.
(v)
The
epithelial cells possess the power of division and regeneration.
1. Simple
Squamous epithelium
(i)
Simple
squamous epithelial cells are extremely thin and flat and form a delicate lining.
(ii)
They
are arranged like the tiles of a floor.
(iii)
All
the cells rest on delicate and non-cellullar basement membrane.
Simple
squamous epithelium tissues are present-
(i)
It
is present in lung alveoli, the Bowman’s capsule of nephron in kidney and blood
vessels.
(ii)
It
is present in oesophagus and lining of the mouth.
Function:
Helps in the exchange of materials across them by simple diffusion.
2. Cuboidal
Epithelium
(i)
It
is composed of cubical cells.
(ii)
They
have centrally placed rounded nucleus.
(iii)
All
the cells rest on delicate and non cellular basement membrane.
Cuboidal
epithelium are present-
(i)
Some
cell of this epithelium may become specialized as glands, which may secrete
substances. These epithelia called glandular epithelia.
(ii)
It
is present in renal tubule of nephron in kidney and sweat glands.
Functions:
(i) Helps in mechanical support, secretion, absorption and excretion.
(ii) Some
time, epithelial cells often acquire additional specialization as gland as
gland cells, which can secrete substances at the epithelial surface. (iii) A
portion of the epithelial tissue folds inward, and multicellular gland is
formed, this is called glandular epithelium.
3. Columnar
Epithelium
(i)
It
is composed of elongated cells which are placed side by side like columns.
(ii)
The
nucleus of oval shaped and generally placed near the base.
(iii)
All
cells rest on delicate and non-cellular basement membrane.
(iv) Sometimes, hair like projections are
present on the outer surface of epithelial cells. This type of epithelium is
called ciliated columnar epithelium.
Columnar
epithelium is present-
(i)
It
is present in lining of alimentary canal, gall bladder and bile duct.
Functions-
(i) Helps in absorption and secretion occur, as in the inner ling of the
intestine, tall epithelial cells are present.
(ii) In the respiratory tract, the columnar epithelial tissue also has
cilia which move and their movement pushed the mucus forward to clear it.
4. Stratified
Epithelium
(i)
It
is composed of several layers of cells and are arranged in a pattern of layers.
(ii)
The
cells of outer layer become flat and hard. These outer layers are called horny
layers which are periodically cast off by friction. This is called moulting.
(iii)
The
innermost layer rests on basement membrane and called germinative layer.
Stratified
epithelium is present-
(i)
It
is present the epidermis of skin, mouth, oesophagus and cornea.
Function:
Plays a little role in secretion and absorption but provides protection to the
underlying tissues.
