Tissue Blog 10

Hello Learner,

In the previous blog, we have discussed Muscular Tissue. I hope you must have understood the chapter well. If you have any doubts, feel free to write in comment box.

Today, we will be discussing more about Nervous Tissue in details

At the end to today's topic, you will be able to

1. Explain nervous tissue.
2. Describe different types of nervous tissue.
3. Tell the location and function of different type of nervous tissue.
4. Draw diagrams of different type of nervous tissue.

So, let us start the topic....

                                         Nervous tissue

(i)   Cells of the nervous tissue are highly specialized for being stimulated.
(ii)  They transmit the stimulus very rapidly from one place to another within the body.
(iii)  The brain, spinal cord and nerves are all composed of the nervous tissue.
(iv)  The cells of this tissue are called nerve cells or neurons.

Neurons- Neurons may be defined as basic structural and functional units of nervous system. These are very long and may be upto a metre long. A neuron consists of a cell body with a nucleus and cytoplasm, form which long thin hair like parts arises. A two distinct regions of neurons are:-

(i)  Cell body (Soma) - It contains nucleus and granular cytoplasm. Other cell organelles are also present in the cytoplasm.
(ii)  Cytoplasmic processes- From the cell body, two types of cytoplasmic processes come out:

a)   Dendrons: They are short processes which break-up into fine branches called dendrites. These processes conduct nerve impulses towards the cell body.
b)   Axon: It is a long, generally unbranched single process which ends in many branches. It conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body.

Functions of nervous tissue:

(i)  Neurons receive and conduct sensations in the form of electric impulses.
(ii)  The impulse travels from one neuron to another through the junction point called synapse.
(iii) Nerve impulse allow us to move our muscles when we want to. The functional combination of nerve and muscle tissue is fundamental to most animal. This combination enables animals to move rapidly in response to stimuli.
