CLASS 9 CHAPTER 5
THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE
Day 5
" Whenever you feel sad, just remember that there are trillions of cells in your body & all they care about is you!!"
Dear Students,
Welcome Back!😊

I hope you have completed your yesterday's assignment.

After this class, you will be able to:
  • Explain the structure and function of Golgi Apparatus, Lysosomes, Mitochondria.
Note: Content written in blue should be recorded as notes in the Biology Notebook.
Happy Learning!😊

Golgi Apparatus

(Not to be drawn in bio notebook)
Structure:

  • first described by Camillo Golgi, consists of membrane-bound vesicles (flattened sacs), arranged parallel to each other in stacks called Cisterns.
  • these membranes have connections with membranes of ER & thus forms a complex cellular membrane system.

Functions:

  • Materials synthesized near the ER are packaged and dispatched to various targets in and out of the cell through the Golgi Apparatus.
  • storage, modification, and packaging of products in vesicles.
  • formation of complex sugars from simple sugars.
  • formation of Lysosomes.

Lysosomes

(Not to be drawn in bio notebook)
Structure:
  • are membrane-bound sacs filled with digestive enzymes.
  • these enzymes are made by RER.
Functions:
  • they are a kind of waste disposal system of a cell.
  • it helps to keep the cell clean by digesting any foreign material like food, bacteria, etc. and worn-out cell organelles by breaking them into small pieces, with the help of a powerful digestive enzyme.
  •  During disturbance in cellular metabolism, when a cell gets damaged, lysosomes may burst and the enzyme can digest their own cell. Thus, they are also regarded as 'suicidal bags' of the cell.

Mitochondria
(Not to be drawn in bio notebook)
Structure:
  • It has two membrane coverings- The outer membrane is highly porous and the inner membrane is deeply folded.
  • The folds create a large surface area for ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate, also called the energy currency of the cell) generating chemical reactions.
  • Mitochondria has its own DNA and ribosomes. Thus, they are able to make some of their own proteins.
Functions:
  • It is regarded as the powerhouse of the cell.
  • The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP.

Assignment

  • Read Pg. 64 & 65 of the textbook.
  • Answer IQ on Pg. 65.
I hope it helped!
See you for the Next Class!
Take care.😊😊😊
