CLASS 9 CHAPTER 5
THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE
Day 4
" Whenever you feel sad, just remember that there are trillions of cells in your body & all they care about is you!!"
Dear Students,
Welcome Back!😊

I hope you have completed your yesterday's assignment.

After this class, you will be able to:
  • Distinguish between prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells.
  • Draw diagram of Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cell.
  • Explain the structure and function of the Endoplasmic Reticulum.
  • Distinguish between RER & SER.
Note: Content written in blue should be recorded as notes in the Biology Notebook.
Happy Learning!😊

Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells

Prokaryote: Pro means primitive & Karyote means nucleus. e.g. bacteria, blue-green algae.
Eukaryote: Eu means true & Karyote means nucleus. e.g. all organisms other than bacteria, blue-green algae.

(to be recorded in bio notebook)

(To be drawn in Bio copy, Refer to Pg. 62,63)

Note: Viruses lack any membrane and hence do not show characteristics of life until they enter a living body and uses its components to multiply.

Cell Organelles:

1. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

( Not to be drawn in bio copy)

Structure:

  • it is structurally similar to the plasma membrane.
  • it is a large network of membrane-bound tubes and sheets, which looks like long tubules ( very small tube) or round oblong bags called vesicles.
  • there are two types of ER-
  1. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
  2. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)

(to be recorded in bio copy)
  Ribosomes:
They are the sites of protein synthesis and are present in every active cell. The manufactured cells are then sent to various places in the cell depending upon need using ER.

Membrane Biogenesis:

Proteins and lipids help in building the cell membrane, named by a process of Membrane Biogenesis.

Functions of ER:

  • to serve as channels for transport of materials ( proteins & lipids) between various regions of the cytoplasm.
  • as a cytoplasmic framework, providing a surface for biochemical activities of the cell.
  • in liver cells of vertebrates, SER helps in detoxifying many poison and drugs.

Assignment

  • Read Pg. 62 & 63 of the textbook.
  • Draw & practice diagram of Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic cell ( Pg. 62)
  • Answer IQ on Pg. 63.
I hope it helped!
See you for the Next Class!
Take care.😊😊😊
